What coaching services does The 2nd Half provide?
We provide one-on-one coaching that consists of regularly scheduled weekly coaching sessions by phone or in person. Monthly half- or full-day sessions or other customized schedules are also available. Coaching also includes e-mail and ad hoc phone support and on-going use of various diagnostic/action tools.
How is The 2nd Half distinct from other coaching services?
Our coaching is grounded in a base of real life experience in executive leadership, entrepreneurship, business and marketing strategy, communications, and human behavior. We have coached top executives of major corporations as well as entrepreneurs, service professionals and small business owners. We specialize in helping people create a new "game" for themselves in the second half of life. We help individuals launch new ventures and we help corporations create new options for their "second half" executives and employees.
Our approach is holistic and focused on mastering life and work transitions. We help our clients define and achieve success across their various key roles in life. We engage our clients in a process of personal reinvention and help them shift how they think about the second half of their life, personally and professionally. We help our clients navigate transitions guided by their most prized commitments in life rather than be distracted, constrained or even paralyzed by their fears. Assisted by our coaching, clients invent the future they crave and learn to immediately live and act as if that possible future exists right now. They begin to attract the resources and opportunities that make that future real. We help them gain the courage necessary to act in the face of their fears and uncertainties.
Our holistic approach is based on the assumption that each of us is 100% responsible for the life we create. From that place of maximum accountability, clients gain more freedom, develop more choices, generate more confidence and power, and experience themselves as the cause of their own life rather than being subject to the whim of external circumstances.
Who are our clients?
Our clients are high achieving people, generally between their late 30's and early 60's in age, who find themselves at a crossroads in their life and career. They include people who, despite material success, are looking for more significance and purpose in life. Our clients are willing to make choices to truly "reinvent" themselves-to design the next chapter of life and career with no compromise on their true commitments and passions. We help our clients rediscover their own internal compass - the alignment of their head, heart and spirit - in order to successfully navigate life and work transitions no matter what the economic landscape may be at the time.
What are some reasons that clients seek our coaching services?
- A belief that "it's now or never" to invent a second half of life that is more than an extrapolation of the first half
- A career interruption due to company restructuring or a lay-off
- Cashing out through the sale of a company that generates the question "what next?" with many possible and competing choices
- Early retirement with too much energy and interest to just sit on the sidelines
- A desired transition from corporate executive to entrepreneur
- A significant promotion or expansion in job responsibilities requiring a step change in leadership style
- A realization that the "thrill is gone" and that it's time for something fresh and new
- The loss of an important person or relationship that leaves an emptiness to be filled
- An increased desire for more significance and meaning in life
- A yearning to fulfill a life's dream that will no longer be stilled
When will an individual benefit most from The 2nd Half Coaching?
- When you are entering into your second half of life and want to live the next years empowered, vital and joyful
- When you seek to end or let go of a current situation and create something new
- When
your company or organization is relying on you to
lead effectively through times of transition
- When you are already in a transition and struggling with the confusion, dilemmas and fears of being "in-between"
- When you are engaged in launching something new and seek to get off to a great and sustainable start
Why should a corporation retain The 2nd Half for its executives?
Gaining the most from the wisdom of experienced executives requires corporations to better understand and support the shifts in motivation of executives in the second half of life. Our coaching helps leaders reinvent themselves and their leadership roles in ways that greatly benefit their corporations while giving them new flexibility in how they structure their own lives and contributions. We help corporations better design programs to retain and utilize the talents of motivated mature executives.
The 2nd Half Transitions Coaching also provides a crucial missing element in outplacement support packages typically offered to departing executives - the element that helps executives clarify what next "game" is truly worth playing and how to take the actions that ensure a successful transition to that new game. Adding The 2nd Half Transitions Coaching to the menu of options included in an executive severance package helps both the executive and the corporation.
Our transitions coaching services can produce enormous good will in the marketplace for the corporation. Well-coached "alumni" who successfully reinvent themselves tend to view their outplacement as a positive "ending". They become ambassadors for their corporations in ways that produce ongoing mutual benefits.
What are some "take aways" from working with The 2nd Half?
Clients learn a specific language, framework of distinctions, and a toolset that help them master transitions throughout life and work-a language that helps them better frame their choices for the second half of life, distinctions that help them clarify what really matters to them and equips them with the ability to attract the investment and support of others, and a toolset that helps them evaluate their own progress and make necessary course adjustments. Clients learn to generate a higher level of collaboration with others. They gain increased courage to go forward despite the uncertainties and fears they face during transition.
What is the process of a transitions coaching engagement?
The first step, at no fee or obligation, is an exploratory
conversation between the prospective client and the coach. The client’s
situation is discussed. Mutual expectations are clarified. A
necessary degree of comfort and trust is established between the client and
coach.
The second step in the process is to contract for a two-and-one-half hour
Foundation Coaching session. Pre-work and follow-up are
included, so this stage amounts to a full week of coaching. The fee is paid up
front with a money back guarantee of satisfaction for the Foundation
Coaching.
During the Foundation Coaching, specific goals
are set, ground rules are established and a Client Success Scorecard is
developed. The scorecard identifies the important elements of success
in the client's life and career, and provides an essential focus for
subsequent coaching sessions. The foundation coaching week is also
designed to provide value on a stand-alone basis regardless of whether
the client proceeds with on-going coaching.
The third step is the decision to proceed with a minimum
three-month commitment to coaching. A contract is signed, the retainer
fee for the three months is paid and weekly 60-90 minute coaching
sessions are scheduled. Unlimited brief phone calls and email support
supplement the scheduled sessions. Each session produces for the client
a weekly action list that the coach supports. Diagnostic tools and
other exercises further complement the coaching conversations.
Following the initial three-month commitment, the client can either
renew on a monthly basis, evolve to a customized maintenance
mode of less frequent coaching or conclude. At the conclusion of any
coaching engagement, a completion session ensures that the client will
continue to apply the new insights and practices essential to
sustaining his or her reinvented life and career.
