The Value of the Third Opinion
April 18, 2005

I'm grateful to many of you for the confidence you've shown over the past four years in introducing me to your friends and colleagues. Your referrals have been instrumental in helping extend my coaching practice - I am working with a growing group of successful people who are creating bold transitions in their work and their lives. To me, this coaching practice is truly a gift, and I thank you for connecting me to so many significant and inspiring people.

Now, there's a natural curiosity when a referral is made, and it's not just on the part of the potential client. I've found many of you want to better understand my work at a level beyond what I do or how I do it. People are also curious about what point of view underpins my work, in what context do I place the coaching relationship?

A piece of the answer is to be found in a recent feature article from Reflections , a publication of the Society for Organizational Learning (SoL) - click here to go to the article. This article captures a dialogue between my good friend Saj-nicole Joni, author of the new book, The Third Opinion and Peter Senge, author of The Fifth Discipline and founder of SoL. For more about Sol, click here.

They explore the critical role of trusted, impartial, third party counsel at all stages of a leader's career and offer models on how executives can act to create their own Third Opinion networks. It was a privilege to be asked by Saj-nicole and Peter to add my commentary. I hope you enjoy the article and that it adds to your understanding of my approach to working with organizations and individuals.

We live in most interesting times. We are witnessing a fundamental change in how thoughtful people are choosing to reinvent the second half of their professional and personal lives. Many of you know that the Chinese symbol for change represents both danger and opportunity - yet when well-navigated, change truly does bring about welcome opportunities. Helping my clients thrive in, not just survive, their transitions is very fulfilling work.

Please be in touch. I would enjoy hearing about your experiences on life's journey - drop me an email or give me a call. And, of course, whenever you feel that I might be of service to a friend or colleague, please connect them with me. Thank you.

All the best,
